Ο Καθηγητής Βασίλειος Χατζής έλαβε το Δίπλωμα του Ηλεκτρολόγου Μηχανικού το 1991 και το Διδακτορικό στην Πληροφορική το 1999 και τα δύο από το Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλονίκης. Είναι Καθηγητής στο Τμήμα Διοικητικής Επιστήμης και Τεχνολογίας του Δημοκριτείου Πανεπιστημίου Θράκης. Από το 1993 έως το 1999 ήταν ερευνητής στο εργαστήριο Τεχνητής Νοημοσύνης και Ανάλυσης Πληροφοριών, στο Τμήμα Πληροφορικής του ΑΠΘ.
Έχει επίσης διδάξει στο Τμήμα Ηλεκτρολόγων Μηχανικών και Μηχανικών Υπολογιστών του Δημοκριτείου Πανεπιστημίου Θράκης από το 2001 έως και το 2010. Διδάσκει μαθήματα πληροφορικής όπως Αντικειμενοστρεφής Προγραμματισμός, Δομές Δεδομένων, Τεχνολογία Λογισμικού σε προπτυχιακό και μεταπτυχιακό επίπεδο. Τα τρέχοντα ερευνητικά ενδιαφέροντά του βρίσκονται στα πεδία της ανάλυσης και επεξεργασίας ψηφιακών εικόνων, της ανάκτησης εικόνων και της ασαφούς λογικής.
Είναι μέλος της Επιστημονικής Επιτροπής του περιοδικού “International Journal of Economic Sciences and AppliedResearch” και μέλος των Επιστημονικών Επιτροπών των συνεδρίων “Management of International Business and Economics Systems” και “Εθνικό Συνέδριο Διοίκησης και Οικονομίας”.
Είναι επίσης κριτής σε αρκετά επιστημονικά διεθνή περιοδικά όπως: Pattern Recognition – Elsevier, Journal ofMathematical Imaging and Vision – Springer, International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence – World Scientific.
Απο τον Οκτώβριο του 2018 συμμετέχει ως καθηγητής Πληροφορικής στο ΠΜΣ Ψηφιακό Μάρκετινγκ.
